🌟 What Does a "Successful Business" Mean to You?

Hey maker,

When you hear the words "successful business," what pops into your head first? I bet it's money.

That makes sense—for a lot of "regular" businesses, success is all about the bottom line. More money = more success. But here's the thing: craft businesses are different.

For most of us creative entrepreneurs, money isn’t the main reason we do this. It's a part of the puzzle, sure. But the heart of a craft business? That comes from love.

When you make something with your hands and share it with the world, you’re putting a piece of yourself out there. Unlike a regular job where you might be proud of a report or a project, your handmade work is deeply personal. It carries your heart, your time, your style—you.

And because it matters that much, it sticks with you. Even when you’re not working, you’re thinking about your little business. It lives in your head and your heart 24/7. That’s why it’s so important to ask:

âť“ Why Are You Doing This?

If you're going to invest your energy and soul into this venture, knowing your "why" can give it meaning—and help you define your version of success.

Let me share a quick story:

In a previous life, I worked for a software development company. It was fun… until it wasn’t. Around the same time, we bought a sailboat and I started dreaming of a life beyond the cubicle. I realized life is short, and it should be joyful. That’s how Sailorgirl Jewelry was born.

Part of my business mission? Take four months off each year to go sailing. I do that. Every single year. Sure, I might have made more money sticking with software. But this life? This is success to me.

When I taught my Start Your Successful Micro-Business class, I always asked:
Why are you here? What do you want from your business?

The answers were as unique as the people:

  • Pay for a hot tub.

  • Take a dream trip to Europe.

  • Fund a new kitchen.

  • Cover the cost of your craft supplies.

  • Add a second income.

There’s no wrong answer.
But if you don’t know what success looks like for you, how will you know when you get there?

🚀 What's Your Why?

  • Why do you read this newsletter?

  • Why are you building a small craft business?

  • What does success mean to you?

Write it down. Stick it on your wall. Say it out loud. Let it guide you.
